Pretty Little Liars is about five best friends who are the "it girls" at Rosewood Day, a private school in Rosewood, Pennsylvania: Spencer Hastings, the black sheep, Hanna Marin, a insecure blond, Aria Montgomery, the sweet, mild, not-quite-innocent one, Emily Fields, a swimmer, and Alison DiLaurentis, the leader of their little gang. Each girl has a secret that could be damaging if they ever come to light. The problem? Alison, or Ali, knew the secrets the girls were so desperate to hide and blackmailed them with it from time to time, never letting the girls forget that she could tell if she wanted to. One fatefull night, Ali disappers and is never seen again.

The story actully begins three years after Ali's disapperance. The four remaining friends - Aria, Emily, Spencer, and Hanna - have driffed apart and gone their seperate ways, each with their secrets safe. But the girls soon begin to recieve threatning messages from a person calling themselves "A" - a person who knew the girls' secrets. And the eerie part? Only Ali knew these secrets. And Ali is gone... right?

I found this book original and gripping. You can't help rooting for the girls, no matter what dispicable things they've done. And nothing is quite what it seems The story was paced just right, and the author has a good teen voice. However, I couldn't help thinking that the girls were a bit too shallow. And they were way too quick to accuse people of being A, which was a bit frustrating. Overall, a fresh new book, and very enjoyable. I'll have more to say latter in the series, but for now, I'll give it four out of five stars.

For those of you looking for more, the books were also turned into a TV series, or you can learn more here and here.
