In Dorothy Must Die, the main character, Amy Gumm, lives in a Kansas trailer park with her mother. Or she did, until a tornado came and swept her home away. To Oz. But Amy has seen the movies and read the books. This isn't Oz like she knew it. The yellow brick road is crumbling, munchkins are little more than slaves. Why? Amy would never have guessed. Dorothy. She returned to Oz and seized power. Power that went to her head and corrupted her. Amy is swept up by a resistance called the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. There she is trained for one purpose: To assassinate Dorothy and save Oz before it's too late and Dorothy goes too far.
Planted in Dorothy's palace and possing as a maid, Amy will have to get close to Dorothy and do her dirty job. But that's not all she'll have to do. Dorothy's three famous traveling compainions, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman, have also been coorrupted. Amy will have to take the lion's courage, steal the Scarecrow's brain, and swipe the Tin Woodman's heart if she wants to keep Oz safe. And almost all on her own, too...
I love how Dorothy was the main antagonist in this story! I've always wondered what would happen if she went bad. But everyone also has their own motives, and you don't see that right away. That really spiced things up. But the love interest, although it looks like it's developing, was weak. Some of the character's mixed views on Dorothy also confused me sometimes. The ending also confused me a bit, because it seemed open for a sequel, but I've heard the boom is a standalone. Overall, I'm going to give this book 4.5/5 stars. Original, thrilling, and suspensfull. I hope there's a sequel!
