Lena has escaped Portland and fled beyond the fence into the Wilds and the home of the Invalids. Now she must come to terms with Alex's death and find her identity in the harsh, kill or be killed world of the rebels. Eventually, she aid the rebellion and is tasked with returnign to the cities. After striking up a accidental friendship with Julian, the DFA's (Deliria-Free-America's) figurehead for the cure, Lena must also decide if she is willing to confess her true identity as a rebel. Meanwhile, war between the cities and the Wilds loms on the horizon, and sides are being taken. The government is finally beginning to aknowledge the existance of the Invalids, which will be the undoing of one or both sides.
Lena's development from a scared girl to a determined rebel is great, and we meet Julian, a new character. He's not openly rebellious, butg iven the chance, he's willing to escape. He's very supportive of Lena. One of the Invalids that we meet, Raven, also stands out. She's a tough, strong leader who will do whatever's best fort he group. When she shows her soft side, though, it's totally worth it.
I love how Lena's alternates between "then" and "now" in her chapters so you learn about the past when she just left the city and at the same town learn what she is doing now as a rebel so not much time is used up explaining everything that happened over the time period between her escape and her joinging the rebellion. And the ending?! I can't wait to see what happens next! BIG cliffhanger that will totally spice up the next book. (Can you guess?) Totally a worthy sequel. Another amazing, thoughtful book by Lauren. 4.5/5 stars. I couldn't put it down!
