Once, the name Moreau would have been spoken with reverence and respect. But those days are long gone. After her father's disgrace drove him to leave his wife and only daughter for a isolated island, Juliet Moreau tries to scrape out a living for herself and her mother in London. After learning that her father still lives, she is determined to find him. The rumors of horrific experiments that forced her father to leave were never confirmed , and there can't be any truth to them... can there be?

Along with Montgomery, her father's assistand, and Edward, a castaway she meets on the trip, Juliet reaches her father's island, where she is welcomed seemingly with open arms by her father. But all is not what it may seem, and Dr. Moreau has indeed been preforming terrible experiments on animals that allow his subjects to resemble humans.

Even worse, one of the experimental monsters has gone too far and is now a lethal threat to the island's inhabitants. Juliet must find a way to end this madness, but her father may not be salvagable. As everything starts to fall apart, she also realizes how far gone her father is when she learns a terrible secret about herself.

The story is sort of based off of/a retelling of the book "The Island of Dr. Moreau" by H.G. Wells. The Madman's Daughter is chilling and suspensful, and Dr. Moreau is the perfect mad scientist. Not everything is black and white, which I enjoyed. THis was a big thriller, too! There were times when I would find myself holing my breath.

Juliet's conflicting beliefs about herself is also interesting, and her character reminds me of Jazz from I Hunt Killers. The conflict of Montgomery of knowledge or what is moraly right is also thought-provoking. 4/5 stars! The sequel, Her Dark Curiosity, is available in print and the last book in the trilogy, A Cold Legacy is scheduled for release on January 27 of this year.
