Ascension, Maine, is a perfectly normal town - on the surface, that is. It's winter break, and the students of the local high school couldn't be happier to have some time off. But for Emily Winters and Chase Singer, things are about to take a dark turn.
The attempted suicide of Sasha Bowlder sets off a terrible chain of events. The three Furies (Yep, like from the greek myths.) are out for revenge, and Chase and Emily are going to pay - Chase for the part he played in Sasha's death and Emily for what she was doing with her best friend's boyfriend. (Need I say more?)
Emily is desperate toescape the Furies's rath, but it's a task easier said than done, and they'll stop at nothing to extract their cruel justice.
This had the makings of a really good book - greek myths, revenge, death, and a little bit of teen drama - what's not to like, right? Sadly, the book itself was a letdown. The "revenge" was seemingly for petty reasons - sure helping to drive a girl over the edge and kill herself is messed up, but someone trying to kill you becuase you hook up with your bestie's guy? Overkill, much?
The characters weren't very deep or interesting and their personalities were a bit bland. The plot progressed well and there wasn't a lot of filler, but I'm not sure I liked the way things wrapped up - I'm not sure how much the sequel will be connected to the first book. It was good for passing the time, but it got a bit boring. 3/5 stars.
Reading the sequel isn't high on my list, but I'll see what I can do. Right now I'm reading two books: Panic by Lauren Oliver, (It's so good!) and Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr. (I've just started, but it looks good so far.)
