One of my favorite (bookish) hobbies is being cynical about authors I dislike. And, when it comes to authors with bad books, who better to work with than Becca Fitzpatrick and her Hush, Hush Saga? Now, everyone has questions when they read a book. Here are some questions and inconsistencies that we never had explained that would have helped the story. WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD.
What happened to Nora's iron pills? During the first book, we learn that Nora is anemic and needs extra iron from pills. However, those pills are nowhere to be found after the first book. After the second book, when she becomes a full nephil, we can assume that she no longer needs them because of her powers. But they were gone before that. So what happened?
And, on the subject of Nora, where did her fear of heights go? Again, this is something we see during the first book and the first book only. If she got over it, how did that happen?
If Patch "gambled away his fortune", how can he afford all his stuff? That's a quote - he said "gambled away my fortune". And yet, over the course of the first couple of books, we see three or four different cars, two houses, and two or three different motorcycles. We can assume that he messes with his opponents while playing at Bo's, and of course immortals will become loaded over the years. But still, that stuff doesn't come cheap.
How old are Patch, Dabria, and Rixion anyways? We never really know how old they are. Patch first comes into the series in 1565 (and that he's at least 800) , but we don't know much about him before that. As for Rixon and Dabria, we don't know anything about their age. And am I the only one bothered by the fact that Patch is THAT old and Nora isn't legal? It's a bit weird gross when you put it that way.
Why invisible wings? Well, okay. This one makes a tiny bit of sense. You can't go around with your wings fully visible. That would just be stupid. But taking into consideration all the mind games the series's angels can play, you would think they would find a way to put some sort of enchanment or glamor on their wings so at least some people can see them.
Since when do angels is the story have telekinesis? In book one, Dabria confronts Nora at her house and tries to kill her. (Not that it would have been a big loss.) She moves around different objects in the house to block doors and so on. But Dabria is the only person in the series who can do this, and this is the only time she does. It probably isn't a power unique to her since none of the other have special abilities only they have. And I doubt that it's a power that fallen angels can't use, since we never see Pepper use it, and he's not fallen.
What happened to Elliot? Now, we know that Jules is dead. But Elliot gets sent to the hospital after that night at the school, and we never hear from him again. He just sort of drops off the face of the Earth and we're expected to forget all about him.
Why is Vee called Vee? I very much doubt that Vee is her real name. It's probably a nickname, like Patch. Why did she get it?
So what is Vee's real name? Vivian? Veronica?
What's up with Vee's parents? Okay. So, since Vee's a nephil, we know who her real father is. (Well, what he is. We don't get a name.) But in the book, she mentioned "parents", which would imply that she has a stepdad. And we never meet her mother or stepfather, even though Nora is her best friend.
When are Nora and Blythe going to talk about Hank? After learning about Hank being her real father, Nora calls her mother, who's away at work, and confronts her. She says "When you get home, we need to talk about Hank Millar." However, this never happens. (Mostly 'cause Nora gets kidnapped.) Does Blythe hope her daughter will forget? And even when Nora remembers, she doesn't bring it up. It's kind of a big deal, if you ask me.
What happened to the farmhouse after Dabria set it on fire? Nora is rescued and spirited away after the fire, and we can infer that the fire department is called. But the fire still would have caused quite a bit of damage, and yet later on we learn that there was minimal damage. And by book two, it's never mentioned again.
Why wasn't Blythe more worried about Nora after she came back from being kidnapped? If I were Blythe, I would keep a closer eye on my daughter after she was kidnapped for three months. Just saying.
What happened to Patch's job? So we know that he left his job at The Borderline. And I'm not refering to his job as a guardian angel. (Which he wasn't very good at, if you ask me.) He was working for a security company. (How ironic.) What happened to that?
What does Blythe really think of Patch? I mean, we know she hates him. But she and Nora never really discuss it.
Why doesn't Nora get a restraining order on Patch? If a guy stalked me for months, I would do something about it. Then again, we already knew that Nora is special.
How much does Nora really care about her academics? In the first book, she seems really big on getting into a top-notch school and keeping her grades up. But looking at her behavior later on, she doesn't seem to care much at all. In fact, school is rarely mentioned.
How often does Patch watch Nora sleep? At least once. I'm just curious.
What happened to Nora's cello? During that scene in book one, chapter one, we learn that Nora plays the cello. But never once to we see the instrument. Is it a ghost cello? An invisible cello?
What happened to Nora and Vee working for the school's Ezine? Well, we never learn what the heck the Ezine even is, although we get that it's sort of like an online school newspaper/blog. Nora says she reviews movies for the Ezine, and yet we only see her do that once in the entire series. Did she get fired? Quit?
Do Nora and Blythe still have money problems? After the second book, it's never mentioned. And they even have Marcie move in. Did Hank like, pay off Blythe or something?
Does Marcie's behavior have anything to do with her death? Marcie acts like, to put it bluntly, a slut. She also just has a hugely unpleasant personality in general. Part of what we learn about Marcie being a nephil is that she's going to die young. Since we know that Marcie later learns about what she is, does she learn about her young death, too? Does it add to her behavior for some YOLO reason?
How did Patch enroll in school? So, we know that there isn't anything in his student file. But how would you get into school without any records of your life? I mean, there has to be some paperwork, right? You would think someone would get suspicious.
Why would Nora's sacrifice kill Jules? We know that she killed him when she let go of that ladder, but we never learn exactly how.
Where did the plush bear Patch won for Nora go? At the carnival in the beginning of book two, (Whe there was still hope.) Patch is playing a carnival game with Nora and Rixon. (This is the bit where Rixon makes a comment about keeping everything PG.) Patch wins a bear and gives it to Nora. What happened to it? Does it become invisible, like the cello?
How the heck is a color wheel fruit diet going to help Vee lose weight? This is stupid. I could write a freaking essay on how this wouldn't work, but let's just say that it would be a waste of time.
Was Patch playing with Nora's head in the kitchen after she and Vee were at the Delphic Boardwalk? It's plausable. He was playing mind games with her on the Archangel.
Is the vanilla bean a legume? Just wondering.
Is Patch Italian? Well, DUH no. But the last name is, and we even get some comments about his appearence. I wonder...
What happened with Vee's fake bomb threat? So, some of you might recall how, in order to let Nora get a look at Patch's student file, Vee created a distraction. By calling up a fake bomb threat. We know that the police are called, but there's nothing beyond that. Bomb threats are a big deal, you know. But we never hear about anything else happening.
"Not this time?" This goes along with the last one. When Nora asks Vee if she physicaly harmed the staff, Vee says "Not this time." That would imply that she had done so during earlier instances or would do so in the future.
"Not alone?" This happens when Nora is at The Borderline and talks to Patch. She is firm that she will never, ever go anywhere alone with him. So would she go somewhere if it was a group thing?
What about that party? Patch invites Nora to come to some party with him, but she doesn't, and it's never mentioned again. So did she forget?
What happened to Patch's wings? Hank tears them out, but after that we don't now what happens. They would make great leverage in the future - two wingfuls of feathers. And we all know what happens if you burn those. But never once do we hear about Hank using them to blackmail Patch. You would think he's smarter than that.
Does Hank care about Blythe and Nora? He says he does, but we never really get the details. And could his enterance into Nora's life in the third book have anything to do with it? Same goes for the reasons he divorced his wife.
What's up with Coach? If you recall, Nora's first biology assignment, way in the begining of the first book, was to learn as much as she can about her lab partner. Coach warns the kids not to make things up because he's going to check to make sure they're telling the truth. How exactly does he plan on doing that? Is he a pyscho stalker too? I mean, really. At this point, I wouldn't be suprised. I've seen it all. Time-traveling gargoyles named Bill, birds that turn into rhinos and fall out of the sky to crush alien bad guys - you name it. Nothing really shocks me anymore.
