Ash and Natalie have been separated. While Ash finds hmself with Acelot and Marcel, Elijah's older brothers, Natalie is with her parents at the rebel base. Ash and his companions are still searching for the Ora, and their quest takes them into the dangerous cities where they are still being hunted. Natalie's parents (I use the plural because it turns out that her father isn't dead.) refuse to help search for Ash, and they are instead focused on overthrowing the government and putting their own men in place.
Nat takes matters into her own hands, leaving the compound and setting off to find Ash, regardless of the fact that she still has the Wrath in her. She does find him, and the group sets off to learn more about the Ora.
Ash is concerned about the rebels. While they want to put a new government in place, he thinks it will just be a new Sentry government without any voice for the other three races, a fact that makes him angry. He's also concerned about Wings, a strange new drug that's officialy being used to enhance the prefomance of Rose's soldiers. However, upon closer inspection, the drug has a much more chilling use.
Throughout the book, we also get flashback to the past, where we see a community where lupines, darklings, and humans tried to live together. (Until they couldn't.) little do Nat and Ash know that the past holds the troth of the Ora.
As far as character development goes, I didn't see much of it. I mean, the characters are fine the way they are, but I wished that Richards had built on them a bit. When you first start the book, it's not really clear what we're getting the flashbacks for. Later, though, I enjoyed them when I figured out what their purpose in the book was, and they helped me learn a lot more abou Rose's past.
I know I hit the sequel pretty hard, but this was a lot better. It was just one of those cases of terrible sequels, I think. The plot was fast and I liked the action as well as the good plot twists the author threw in to spice up the end. If anything, I'm not totally happy with the ending. It wrapped everything up well and got ties up loose ends nicely, but I almost wish the author could have spent a bit more time to pull things out a little longer. Everyone (that deserves it ) gets a nice ending though, which made me happy.
All in all, this was a good series as a debut, and I would suggest it to any fans of romance or fantasy. I would warn you, though, that you won't always like the feels. It's kind of like Nightshade that way, really. Much like Nightshade, this series and I had a bit of a love/hate relationship. It's mostly love, though. :) 4/5 stars.
