Griffin, Finley, Sam, and Emily just don't get a break. After the death of Mei, the group, including a hearbroken Jasper, returns to London. Everything is going fine - Emily confesses her feelings to Sam, Finley and Griffin aren't avoiding each other anymore, etc. - until Emily is kidnapped. It turns out that the Machinist isn't quite ready to die just yet, and Emily is given a choice: Give him a new body, or die. Faced with the death of the people she cares about if she disobeys, Emily reluctantly agrees. The Machinist's new body would be Mila, a machine who is more human girl than metal. Emily has no wish to harm the innocent automaton, and the two strike up an unlikely friendship. When Mila learns what the Machinist has planned for her, she is horrifed and offers to help Emily escape.
That pretty much sums up everything that happens. It's not a super long book, and I felt like a lot of it was filler. The series is starting to bore me, to be honest. Finley and Griffin are starting to annoy me with the mixed signals they keep giving each other, and although I saw more of Emily in this book, I learned very little about her that I didn't already know. The characters aren;t developing, and the book is starting to remind me of The Infernal Devices. (Honestly, if you want to read a series about evil machines, just read that. Cassie Clare is an amazing author, and Shadowhunters rock!) There's not much good to say about the story. I wanted to like the series, but it's becoming dull, and maybe a tiny bit repetitive. 3/5 stars. On the other hand, there's only one more book to go - The Girl With the Windup Heart. Maybe things will pick up a bit for the series finale?
