After the strange and gruesome death of Trevor, her crush, Luce Price is sent to Sword & Cross, a reform school. Luce has no idea what happened to Trevor the night he died, but she does know that she didn't kill him. Or did she? Luce already feels like she's going insane, seeing and hearing shadows nobody else can.

Luce feels lost at Sword & Cross, where she seems to be one of the only students who has trouble keeping up with the strict staff and nightmarish schedule. She finds friends in Penn, the groundkeeper's daughter, and Arriane, a outgoing student who takes Luce under her wing.

Then Luce meets Daniel, a fellow student, and she feels an instant attraction. She's sure she's met him before. Daniel doesn't return the feelings, and he gives her mixed signals, confusing her. One minute he's friendly, the next he's putting as much distance as he can between them as possible.

Luce inlists Penn's help to try to get to the bottom of whatever secret Daniel may be keeping and his strange behavior. He's not the only odd student at the school - his friends, including Roland, Gabbe, and Arriane also have something strange about them that Luce can't quite fingure out. Even Cam, a student that instantly seems to become protective of Luce and clashes with Daniel on multiple occasions, is reserved and seems to be holding something back.

As the students' secrets come to light, Luce finds herself caught in the middle of a deadly war, and everything has happened before. This time, however, there may not be another chance if the wrong people lose.

Penn and Arriane are both energetic and cheerful, helping to lighten the mood in the story. Penn is loyal and always stays by Luce, but even though Arriane is kind to Luce, she's a little reserved and would rather hang out with people like Gabbe or Roland who know her secrets. (Understandably.) Gabbe is sweet and always perfect. Even when she's kicking some serious butt, she always has her hair and nails done perfectly. She drives Luce insane and gets on her nerves, but she's not all bad. She's trying to keep Luce out of trouble.

I don't really trust Cam. He seems nice on the surface, but he doesn't always play nice. If he doesn't get what he wants, he can be unreasonable. Cam's temper gets the best of him sometimes, and he's all the more dangerous because he doesn't strike me as the bad guy at first. Daniel... I don't know. he's confusing, and even though he tries to convince Luce that he doesn't like her, he's very protective of her. I'm not sure I like him as a character, if only because he's so frustrating with his mixed signals. I didn't see much of

his personality, and I hope that changes in the other books.

I liked Luce as a character because she was so normal. She's a little stalkerish and obsessed with Daniel, but she gets that it's stupid of her and hates that she cares so much. She's a ordinary girl who's pushed into something totally alien. Her normalcy is a nice change, I think. I just hope it doesn't make her boring or annoying later on in the series.

This was the craziest reform school ever. It makes a good backdrop for a fallen angel novel with it's church-turned-gym, among other things. You know how I always say that fallen angels always wear black in the books? They do in this one, but for a different reason: Black is the school's uniform. Everyone has to wear black, totally black, and nothing but black! The book had some elements of Hush, Hush, but it was way better. The only two things I didn't totally like were the ending and Daniel. The ending got a little sappy, and I don't think Luce and Daniel have much chemistry. Overall, the book was pretty good and I enjoyed it, but I'm not sure if it would be good enough for a four stars - it was right on the edge, though. 3.9/5. It was a decent read.
