After a car crash that should have killed her, Ever Bloom gained the unexplainable power to read other people's emotions and, effectively, their minds. Since then, she's lived a relatively normal life with a relative, kept company be her friends and her sister's ghost. Things take a turn for the strange when Ever's life is interrupted by Damen, a mysterious boy who is immune to Ever's abilities - and has some of his own, Ever is pulled into Damen's strange world, where she confronts the bizarre and impossible.
I'm not quite sure what to make of Ever. She isn't unlikable, but I didn't love her, either. She struck me as antisocial and shy, hardly interested in being around other people. Sometimes it seemed like she would rather read a person's mind then get to know them, which I didn't like. She's also a little grumpy. On the other hand, she does seem to care deeply for her friends and family and would go to great lengths to take care of them - but until they're in danger, she mostly just brushed them off for the majority of the book.
My main problem with Evermore was the love interest. First of all, it's rushed and the two don't know each other very well. Second, they argue constantly, and one moment Ever adore Damen, the next she's yelling at him. It's kiss and make up over and over again before falling back into fighting. Then Ever gets irrationally jealous. It's pretty petty, and I didn't enjoy it. Make up your mind, girl! Do you like him or not?
I wasn't a big fan. Despite the several issues I had with the story, it kept me somewhat interested up to the end, when I encountered on of the big things that made me go, wait a sec. I've seen this before. Evermore is nowhere near as creative as it wants you to believe. It has the exact same, as far as I've read, idea as Fallen when it comes to reincarnation and love. (Minus the angels.) That ticked me off a bit. And the mysterious guy cliché? Give me a break! I'm so sick of that with supernatural novels. I wasn't a fan of Ever (She was kind of meh, sort of like the book) and I hated the love interest. I also didn't get to know any of the characters very well. The story left me with a major question: Where to Ever's powers fit in? There wasn't much use for them in the story. They didn't have a purpose. Overall, I would steer clear of The Immortals. 2/5 stars.
